If you own a BMW built from around 2016 onwards and it did not come with Apple CarPlay from the factory, there is a good chance it is already capable of running it - it just has not been unlocked yet. This guide explains everything you need to know: how to check if your BMW is compatible, what you need to carry out the activation, and how the process works from start to finish.
Is my BMW compatible?
Compatibility depends on which head unit your BMW has fitted. The activation covered in this guide applies to BMWs equipped with an NBTevo Professional Navigation system - this is the iDrive 5 or iDrive 6 unit found in most F-Series and G-Series BMWs from 2016 onwards.
Compatible models include the F20/F21 1 Series, F30/F31/F34 3 Series, F32/F33/F36 4 Series, G30/G31 5 Series, G11/G12 7 Series, F48 X1, F39 X2, F25/G01 X3, F26/G02 X4, F15/G05 X5, F16/G06 X6 and G29 Z4, among others. If your BMW has a different head unit such as a CIC, CCC or MGU system, this particular activation does not apply.

Step 1: Check your NBTevo software version
Even if your BMW has an NBTevo head unit, the CarPlay experience you can unlock depends on which software version it is running. Here is how to check:
- On your iDrive, go to Navigation
- Press the Options button
- Select Navigation Settings
- Scroll down to Position and Version
- Select Version Information
Your version will appear as NBTevo_ followed by a letter. Here is what that means for CarPlay:

Step 2: Check whether your BMW has a WiFi antenna
Wireless Apple CarPlay requires a built-in WiFi antenna to be present in the vehicle. Many BMWs from this era have one fitted as standard, but not all.
The easiest way to check is to look at your vehicle's options list. If your BMW was ordered with Telephony with wireless charging (option code 6NW) or WLAN Hotspot (option code 6WD), a WiFi antenna is already fitted. You can check your option codes by entering your VIN into a BMW VIN decoder, or by using our compatibility checker.
If your vehicle does not have a built-in WiFi antenna, one needs to be installed before CarPlay can be activated wirelessly. We supply OEM-spec antennas and can include one with your order - simply select the WiFi Antenna variant when ordering. Installation does not require specialist tools and most customers complete it in around 20 minutes.
Step 3: What you need before you start
Before placing your order, make sure you have the following to hand:
- A Windows laptop running Windows 8 or newer
- A BMW ENET cable - this plugs into your car's OBD2 port and connects to your laptop via USB. These are widely available on Amazon and eBay for approximately £10 to £15.
- A stable internet connection - required for the remote session or for downloading activation files
- Your 17-digit VIN - found on your V5C, inside the driver's door jamb, or on the windscreen. You will need to include this in your order notes at checkout so we can generate your vehicle-specific activation files.
Step 4: Choose your activation method
We offer two ways to carry out the activation, depending on how hands-on you want to be.
Option A: Home DIY Activation
This is the most popular option. Once you place your order and provide your VIN, we prepare your vehicle-specific activation files and send them to you by email - typically within one hour during UK business hours. You then follow our step-by-step instructions to complete the activation yourself from home. Most customers finish in under 15 minutes. No technical knowledge is required.
Option B: Remote Guided Appointment
If you would prefer us to handle the activation entirely, choose the Remote Guided Appointment option. Once your order is placed, we get in touch to arrange a convenient time. At the agreed time, you connect your ENET cable to your laptop and we connect remotely to carry out the full activation for you. The session typically takes under 30 minutes, and you do not need to do anything technical - we handle it all.
Step 5: What happens after activation
Once the activation is complete, Apple CarPlay is permanently enabled on your vehicle. There is no subscription, no annual renewal, and no recurring cost. The activation is tied to your car's VIN, not to any external account.
To use CarPlay for the first time, turn on Bluetooth and WiFi on your iPhone, go to Settings - General - CarPlay, and select your BMW from the list. After the initial pairing, CarPlay will connect automatically every time you start the car.
The result is a fullscreen, wireless CarPlay experience that looks and feels completely factory-fitted - because it is. It uses the same iDrive controls, the same screen, and the same integration points that BMW intended. Waze, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Spotify, WhatsApp and all your other CarPlay apps will appear directly on your iDrive display.
Common questions
Will it void my warranty?
This is a software-only OEM activation. It unlocks a feature already built into your head unit using the same coding tools as BMW dealers. The activation is fully reversible and leaves no trace. If your vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty, we always recommend checking with your dealer first.
What if BMW resets it during a service?
In some cases a BMW software update at a dealer can reset the CarPlay activation. If this happens, we will reactivate your vehicle free of charge - just get in touch with your original order details.
Does it work with Android?
No. This activation enables Apple CarPlay only. Android Auto is not supported on NBTevo head units.
My version is older than NBTevo_N - what are my options?
You can still get fullscreen wireless CarPlay, but you need a software flash to iDrive 6 first. Our iDrive Software Update & CarPlay Activation service combines both steps and is carried out as a single mail-in or remote session.
